Age is just a number

It’s hard to believe I turned 54 this past week. But boy do I feel like there’s a disconnect between my numeric age and how I feel. I’m not really sure how 54 is suppose to feel, act, or look. All I know is that I feel youthful (could be my immature spirit πŸ˜‰ There’s the old cliche that age is just a number. And it’s true. Age IS just a number. It doesn’t define who we are. But we do tend to take that number seriously.

I’m embracing the changes in my life, and in my skin. As I see it, those fine lines etched into my skin are a natural part of aging. And while they are a sign of a life well-lived, I will do what I can to minimize their appearance. Yes, of course Botox is always an option, but Botox doesn’t equate to healthy, glowing skin. And THIS is my end-game after all.

So whether you’re just starting to notice fine lines, want to smoothe texture, or simply trying to outpace ‘the numbers,’ here are some suggestions to consider, and that I try to follow. <

1. Protect Your Skin from the Sun: Didn’t see that coming did you? πŸ˜‰ UV rays from the sun can accelerate skin aging and contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of your daily skincare routine. Find a sunscreen you love and use it daily, even on cloudy, rainy days. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours when outdoors.

2. You Are What You Eat: I don’t remember eating any sexy beasts today? πŸ˜‰ We tend to forget about our diet when it comes to the health of our skin. The nutrition that comes from the food we eat is transformed into the nutrients our body needs to create the healthiest cells possible. We need antioxidants, minerals, omegas, and water in order to make the very best skin we can. Why can’t In & Out offer an Omega-rich burger?! πŸ˜‰

3. Stay Hydrated: Be honest with yourself. Are you drinking at least 8 8-oz glasses per day? Challenge extended. πŸ˜‰ Water has many functions within your body. It’s crucial to cell health. And it translates to overall healthier skin; plumper skin, less congestion, smoother texture, and increased circulation. And the beauty of drinking water, is that it’s also one of the least expensive ways to improve your skin. πŸ™‚ Long story short… Drink. More. Water.

4. Manage Stress: Our skin and its response are linked to our emotional wellbeing. Think about it; when we get embarrassed or anxious, our skin begins to sweat, our face flushes, and our skin get’s blotchy. When we are scared, our skin becomes pale and we begin to perspire. Chronic stress can absolutely contribute to premature aging and exacerbate existing wrinkles. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, Dry Flotation – Ahem – facials. πŸ˜‰ Do more of the hobbies you enjoy. Managing stress not only benefits your overall well-being but also promotes healthier skin.

5. Caring for Your Skin: Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It is your first line of defense for your immune system. It protects your inside from the outside world. It connects you to the environment. Your skin is what others see of you when they look at you, even if they don’t yet know your mind and beautiful personality. Having a home care routine, even the most basic, will provide support for your skin. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. It just has to be appropriate for YOU!

6. Be Patient and Consistent: Improving any skin condition takes time and consistent effort. Give your skin time to respond. A skin condition, whether it’s lines, pigmentation, or acne… these didn’t appear overnight. And dependent on that pesky ‘number,’ our cell turnover can be anywhere from 25-45 days. So stay committed to your skincare regimen, practice patience, and speak kindly to yourself. <3

7. Find Yourself a Skin Therapist: Whether it’s yours truly, or an amazing therapist down the street, find a therapist you can connect with. One who can get to know your skin, and can help you create healthy skin habits. Great skin doesn’t come from a one & done facial. It’s a daily habit, with consideration to all aspects of a healthy lifestyle.

Now go out and embrace that number. <3
